ATJ – All attention on Jerry Sandusky’s trial, then the Cosby trial and now the Allentown riot. What does this tell us?
The American public has made up its mind. The story of Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant football coach who was accused of a horrible sex crime, is so thoroughly turned inside out that what we see is the one version that he actually told his lawyer. We saw “Joe Paterno”, the most powerful man in college football, make a call that may have saved his career but turned him into a pariah. We’ve seen “a judge and jury of his peers” who have heard a legitimate defamation suit against Sandusky, but are not ready to deal with such a serious crime. We’ve watched every chance for publicity disappear, without either side gaining ground.
For once, we are not in a fix: despite everything, it’s clear that the guilty man in this case will be brought to justice, the public will need to deal with some really devastating consequences that will still leave the NCAA in shock, and Penn State will become a pariah on the nation’s college football landscape.
It’s a pity that all this publicity brought on the Allentown riot, but it might just be some measure of justice that the players in Penn State’s football team have earned some pretty heated public ire.
