Distressed fingers, profuse bleeding. Sounds like a scene from a horror movie, doesn’t it? Perhaps.
But this is more than just a highlight reel of bloody hands. This is a sad reflection of the true character of the person performing the action.
As anyone who has lived through football and pop music can tell you, holding the pitch face down with fingers almost to the bone is not done very often. Particularly by professional footballers.
That’s why the sight of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan unable to remain on his feet after taking a shotgun snap despite the blood being drained from a finger following a tackle by Carolina Panthers rookie linebacker Shaq Thompson has enraged Twitter users.
“How is that okay?!?”
Ryan could only stand up once after slopping blood from his finger while desperately trying to stem the flow
At the same time, the Falcons star was in disbelief at the consequences of his error and appeared to be genuinely disgusted and hurt by the injury. And as he began to rush off to the dressing room for more medical attention, his injury became all the more clear.
The incident brought a smile to the face of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton – who has been subject to plenty of injury jokes during his time in the NFL.
It also brought the Cardinals, in Arizona, some practice in rushing the field in a panic.
Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin was not amused
