PGA Championship: Rory McIlroy says he feels 'capable of being the best player in the world'

In what he said was the highlight of his career, Rory McIlroy bagged his 20th title in the PGA Championship in Georgia

Rory McIlroy says he feels ‘capable of being the best player in the world’ after winning the British Open last week.

The world number five has now won 10 times on the US PGA Tour, six on the European Tour and won the US PGA Championship in 2011.

“We are all at different stages of our career,” said McIlroy at the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“I was 21 when I won the Open Championship, and I feel confident now. That is why I think I’m capable of being the best player in the world. I’m a full player now.”

Four-time major winner McIlroy lost out in the final of the BMW PGA Championship to Dustin Johnson last month but rebounded with a seven-under-par 63 on Sunday to beat Francesco Molinari by three shots.

He begins his defence of the German event at 7:40 BST on Thursday.

“I’ve played 20 PGA Championships at a certain point and have won it four times,” added McIlroy.

“I am very proud of that. It’s been a few years since my first win and it was nice to get the monkey off my back.

“I enjoyed every part of it. You get into contention in a lot of these events and get close a lot of times, but you need to win at some point.

“This year has been maybe the most successful I’ve had. To win in each of the four majors is pretty special and I’m taking a lot of confidence from that.”
