Pete Schauffele’s son says his “dad is hogging” his Olympic gold medal.
Former amateur golfer Schauffele won Team USA’s first US Open title since 1904 on Sunday, beating Justin Thomas in a play-off.
The 28-year-old has told PGA Tour that it was a “surreal” moment to be awarded the Championship Title.
“When I was walking up to receive my gold medal in front of the most people I’ve ever competed against, it was very special,” he said.
“Right now my dad is hogging it, so I will have to take it from him. I’m sorry.”
Pete Schauffele, whose last name was confirmed as a public record in April, was one of five brothers in his family from Sweden, Denmark and Sweden.
But it was son Xander, 17, who finished third in the 2018 FedEx Cup to push his dad into second spot in PGA Tour earnings.
Schauffele, who has jumped from 151st in the world rankings in May to 65th, will be one of the top 10 players at next year’s US Open in St Andrews, Scotland.
“I’m having fun, I’m enjoying it and I have to do the same thing in St Andrews, the next time I get back there,” he said.
