How to stay safe at your holiday gathering

The holidays often mean family get-togethers — and with the family comes a heightened risk of experiencing some mishaps. It’s much more common to get injured outdoors at holiday gatherings than at work, health experts say, citing the inherent danger of leaving doors open, behind or on.

While it’s best to stay indoors with your loved ones over the holidays, staying active is a great way to strengthen the core muscles and strengthen your bones as well as protect yourself from head injuries.

“The more you can stay active, the less likely you are to get hurt,” says Peter Forman, executive director of the Delaware Safety Council, who is also the founder of Sports Physician America.

“If you get too much sedentary time, injuries like strained muscles are more likely, and so staying active is very, very important.”

If you are hit by a car, a fall or fall from a ladder, Forman says to remember to be prepared in case of emergency.

“First and foremost is stay together, stay hydrated, stay as connected as possible to emergency responders, stay sober, stay calm, don’t panic, and if someone is injured, don’t try to do it yourself,” he said.

“Obviously, take in as much oxygen as you can as you get to the hospital.”

It’s important to take precautions at home as well.

Richard Keitt, a safety specialist with the National Association of State Fire Marshals, suggests staying out of the sun with electronics in a chair and putting a head rest on if you’re using a cell phone.

“Even if you’re not playing games that might have some accelerometers built into them, so there could be a brain condition that could cause a crash if you get tired or too close to a cell phone or your phone goes down,” he said.
