Canada investigates police shooting in Brampton, Ontario

Youth allegedly stabbed after fisticuffs and a bystander shot outside an athletic venue on Friday night

Homicide officers have taken control of the investigation into a shooting outside an athletic facility in suburban Toronto that left a 19-year-old man dead and injured three people.

The victim, identified by police as Jaspreet Gill, was rushed to hospital on Friday night after the gunfire outside a Brampton field house, but died on Monday.

The incident came just over a week after 13 people were shot dead in the deadliest mass shooting in Canada’s largest city’s history.

“We’re in the custody of investigators with the Ontario police service. They have taken over the investigation,” said Detective Matt Markham, adding that police were talking to witnesses and awaiting autopsy results.

Cities across Canada’s biggest province have struggled to keep guns off the streets after a spate of gun violence last year that prompted the province of Ontario to pass several new gun-control measures.

It is unclear what sparked the latest shooting.

On Sunday, a 16-year-old boy was arrested after shots were fired outside a Toronto school on Saturday morning, injuring two other people. Officers did not recover a weapon, police said.
