People around the world who struggle with a distressing relationship situation were heartened on New Year’s Day when Adele sang a love song about her divorce. But shortly afterwards, her beau, Simon Konecki, popped the question in a park near her home in west London.
The singer, who had just released her latest album, 25, had been dancing to her song Someone Like You in a central London park as part of a live concert organised by a global coalition called Hands Across the Water.
The Turn Up the Music event raised money for clean water access and to support women and girls affected by sexual and gender-based violence.
Fans shared an intimate video of her hugging and celebrating with friends, before her boyfriend arrived with a ring. The finale was Adele’s new song, Before He Cheats, in which she sings about being in an unhappy marriage: “You’re all for you/ But I’m always for him.”
A number of fans posted about the surprise on social media. Mike York wrote: “Omg my heart just jumped out of my chest that Adele got engaged, I’m going to cry this will be my happiest new year ever.”
Adele won two Grammy awards and two Brit awards in 2017.
